International Conference to Call for Information to Support Tourism Enterprises at the Regional Level
Madrid, Spain, 29 September 2009
Understanding
the economic contribution of tourism at the regional level is essential
for more efficient destination management and the effective positioning
of tourism. The 1st International Conference on the
Measurement and Economic Analysis of Regional Tourism (San Sebastian,
Spain, 27-28 October), aims to further the study of tourism’s impact at
the regional level.
The
importance of tourism in the economy and the relevance of information
to support tourism enterprises and public bodies are undeniable. As
such, the measurement of tourism as an economic activity and the
monitoring of tourism flows will improve the management of tourism
destinations, particularly at the regional level. It will furthermore
support the economic and political positioning of the tourism sector.
In light of this, the Conference aims at advancing research, and
the practical application thereof, on measuring and analysing domestic
tourism, identifying instruments for measuring and modelling tourism
flows, rethinking Small and Medium Size Enterprises in tourism, and
fostering innovation in the tourism enterprise, all with a regional
perspective.
This Conference is the first in a series of international
gatherings designed and organized jointly by Spain’s Tourism
Administration– Spain’s Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce, the
Institute for Tourism Studies and the State Society for the Management
of Innovation in Tourism Technologies – and the International Network
on Regional Economics, Mobility and Tourism (INRouTe).
INRouTe, an initiative by UNWTO together with the Affiliate
Members the Centre for Cooperative Research in Tourism (CICtourGUNE)
and Araldi, both based in Spain, aims at becoming an international
reference on relevant matters relating to the measurement and analysis
of tourism as an economic activity at the regional level.
Focusing efforts at the regional level allows for local tourism
stakeholders to take a more tailored approach to the development of the
industry. This is vital as many aspects of the industry are only
considered at national and not local level. The new approaches
resulting from this Conference will serve not only to meet the needs of
future travelers in specific regions but also of international
travelers worldwide.
